Austrian top talent handles horror crash
“I wasn’t in that wreck, was I?”
In October 2022, the Austrian striker Muharem Huskovic had a serious car accident. This burst into flames and Huskovic ended up in intensive care. Now the 19-year-old is on his way back – and is talking about the difficult time for the first time.

In mid-October, Muharem Muskovic and his girlfriend’s car collided with the back of a truck.
It’s been a good two months since Muharem Huskovic’s career came to an abrupt halt. The 19-year-old top talent in the service of Austria Wien crashed his car into a truck. Huskovic was rescued from the burning car, came to the intensive care unit and was temporarily put into an artificial coma. In the accident on the day before the Conference League home game against Villarreal, the 19-year-old tore his spleen and cruciate ligament.
«I just remember that we drove home from my girlfriend, she drove. All I know is that I woke up in the hospital. I thought I was home, I thought: I have to go to the game, »he says on club television about the only memories of the terrible accident.
Doctors must show Huskovic accident pictures
The doctors finally give Huskovic the difficult news and show him pictures of the accident. “I didn’t expect it at all, I was confused, clueless. I was then shown pictures of the car and I just thought to myself: I wasn’t in there, was I?
He watches his team’s 1-0 defeat in the Conference League from the hospital bed. The teammates hold a jersey for the camera for the team photo, and in the ninth minute of the game – matching Huskovic’s jersey number – the fans applaud. There is a signed jersey from the away team with a get well wish.
Huskovic experienced his first visit to the stadium weeks later. There is a warm welcome to huge applause from the fans. “I cried easily. The fans have given me a lot of support, »he thanks for the support.

Since then, the Austrian youth international has been working hard on his return to the pitch. “Rehab is going very well, better than expected. It’s already working very well on the left, my knee was operated on on the right and it’s still a little stiff. But there are positive steps to be seen day by day.” A return is probably not yet possible this season. (hon)
