Drama about Marta Giunti. An immune deficiency was discovered in the Italian skier and a lymphoma is being investigated.
About four years ago, Marta Giunti regularly scored points in the European Ski Cup. The Italian was predicted a future in the World Cup.
Many injuries threw her back, but Giunti also drove successfully in FIS races last season and still dreamed of the really big stage. But now you can’t think about that anymore.
Shocking diagnosis
Because the now 26-year-old shares an emotional post on her Instagram account that she will stay away from the ski slope after a shocking diagnosis.
So she had repeatedly suffered from discomfort in the last few months. Because the cause was not found at first, a psychological problem was suspected.
But after countless tests, she was finally diagnosed with an immune deficiency. But that’s not all. “That might have been enough, but what really shocked me was the statement that a lymphoma should be examined,” writes Giunti.
“Can’t wait to win this race”
The sudden turnaround shocked the Italian: “How did we go from a simple ‘a psychologist could solve everything’ to ‘you could have lymphoma’?” she wonders.
But Giunti is combative even after the double shock diagnosis: “I now know my opponent and I can hardly wait to win this race.”
Another Italian skier also suffered a severe setback. Elena Fanchini, the 2005 downhill vice world champion, was diagnosed with cancer for the first time shortly before the 2018 Olympic Games. She was later considered cured and wanted to return to the ski circus, but the cancer is back. Fanchini simply describes her renewed illness as bad luck. The two-time World Cup winner (2005 downhill in Lake Louise and 2015 downhill in Cortina) doesn’t think about giving up. “I will fight,” she says. (bjl)
