“He’s one of us!”
In Austria they hope for Feuz as a talent promoter
Beat Feuz has found a second home in Oberperfuss near Innsbruck. The Tyroleans have taken the Schangnauer so dear to their hearts that they would love to hire him for their young skiers.

View of Oberperfuss, the residential community of ski star Beat Feuz.
In the center of Oberperfuss there are heated discussions in the M1 restaurant. The fact that Austria is almost 1000 points behind Switzerland in the Alpine Nations Cup obviously hurts the pride of the three elderly men at the regulars’ table. “We just don’t have any good young people behind Kriechmayr at the moment,” complains Peter. “And it drives me crazy when the reporters try to sell us a 25-year-old Austrian as a talent.”
“With the Norwegians and the Swiss, the real talents are at most 20,” rumbles Fritz. Now Ewald speaks up. “Maybe our favorite Swiss Beat Feuz will take care of our offspring after he resigns?” The three gentlemen raise their beer glasses to this idea. Because although Beat Feuz grew up in the country of the arch-rival in the Alps, the Emmentaler is “one of us!” for Oberperfer. In 2007, at the Junior World Championships in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Feuz won not only two gold medals and one bronze medal, but also the heart of top performer Katrin Triendl. Three years ago, the Olympic champion built a house in the 3,000-inhabitant community, which is 15 kilometers west of Innsbruck. «I meet the beat regularly when he’s strolling through the village with his pram. He is such a nice person, without any star airs, »enthuses Ewald.
The bad Feuz memory
On the grounds of the Oberperfuss tennis club, however, we meet a strong fellow who also associates really bad memories with Feuz. The man’s name is David Zanon and he is a full-time police officer with a special unit. In his free time, the Tyrolean is a passionate tennis player. He was the outstanding captain of TC Axams for years and was also around 2000 positions better than Feuz in the national tennis ranking. Nevertheless, in 2016 he suffered the most bitter defeat of his career against Kugelblitz in the Tyrolean club championship. “Beat really brought back every ball that day while I couldn’t bring myself to my true potential. It really wasn’t fine for me, I’m almost desperate and said a lot of words that are adult. I was depressed for a long time after this match.”

Zanon only got better when Feuz started his grandiose series of successes in 2017 with the gold medal at the World Championships in St. Moritz. “From that point on, I could at least claim that I lost to a world champion.” In the summer of 2017, the bull from Axams was able to return the favour. “I was able to win at least in doubles against Beat. But we haven’t played a single until today.”
Feuz is also an ace in poker
Feuz has also made a name for himself as a card player in Oberperfuss. Until a few years ago, Hannes Kleissel regularly organized poker tournaments in his hotel. “Beat kept showing us the limits. I am convinced that he would have had success as a poker pro.” In honor of the Swiss who had been ripped off, Kleissel offered guests “Beat-Feuz-Cordonbleu” with Emmental cheese in his restaurant. “For a while, this was the big hit on our menu. With the resignation, I have now also removed the Feuz-Cordonbleu from the offer. » One thing remains unchanged in Operperfuss even after the career of the Swiss downhill king has ended: Feuz will play at the village football tournament in summer, as in previous years, with a Schangnau team that calls itself “the thirsty Emmentaler”.
