IOC is looking for alternatives for winter games

A rotation system is currently being considered, said Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), on the fringes of the Luge World Championships in Oberhof, Germany. For example, winter sports resorts with guaranteed snow could regularly host Olympic Games or World Championships and thus plan for the long term.

Then it would possibly be ensured “that the systems remain at the necessary high standard,” says Bach. The fact that fewer and fewer winter sports resorts remain “especially in Europe” will mean that the existing areas with guaranteed snow will become more popular with tourists.

But that could also reduce the willingness in these winter sports resorts to “reserve times for winter sports events or Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games over four or six weeks,” explained the 69-year-old.

All of this must be considered when the winter sports associations plan the competition calendar in the future “and when it comes to awarding the Olympic Winter Games for the time, especially after 2030”. The next Winter Games will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in 2026. (SDA/mab)
