Is the final tournament coming at the wrong time for Hüberli/Brunner?

The Pro Tour Finals (before that World Tour Finals) are the culmination of a beach season. Since 2015, the best duos in the top 10 of the season have usually been determined in late summer or autumn at the latest.

Until now: Tanja Hüberli (30) and Nina Brunner (27) are currently playing in Doha (Kat) in the Pro Tour Finals 2022 – and ring in the 2023 season with this top-class final tournament.

The ten teams are made up of the top 8 in the world rankings and two wild card duos. The two Swiss women are number 6 in the ranking for the Tour crown. And they got off to a good start: they beat the Germans Tillmann/Müller in the opening game 2-0 (21:18. 21:19), against the fourth in the world rankings Stam/Schoon (Ho) they lost 1:2 (21 :19, 18:21, 11:15) in the tie break. Also in their group: Hughes/Chen (USA) and Barbara/Carol (Br). The top three teams from each group advance to the knockout rounds.

The big question: Isn’t the final tournament, the start of the season for the duos, coming at the wrong time? “No,” says Bruner. “It’s cool for us. After the comparisons with these top teams, we know immediately where we stand.” The defender also emphasizes that this tournament is not about world ranking points and that there is no pressure. “It’s a great opportunity for us to start the season against the best teams in the world,” added block player Hüberli.

There is a lot of prize money for this: the tournament winners will receive 150,000 US dollars, the runners-up will be rewarded with 80,000 and the third with 50,000 US dollars.
