With FC Lugano’s cup victory, the last European questions have been clarified. YB is firmly in the Conference League qualification because St. Gallen can no longer catch up. Should cup winner Lugano succeed in intercepting the dethroned champion, that is irrelevant in Europe. YB is in anyway.
Basel and YB set, Lugano rather not
The Ticino will start the Mission Conference League from the third qualifying round (and in the Cornaredo!), so they have to survive two rounds because the last obstacle is the playoffs.
It doesn’t matter whether Basel or YB are in second place at the end of the season, as both start in the second round of qualifying, so they have to survive three rounds. Both will be safe at least for rounds two and three. In the playoffs, that’s still open, but likely. Lugano, on the other hand, should be unsettled from the start.
Last time only four teams – hopefully
The next will be the last season with only four Swiss teams. After that it’s five again because we’ve gained three places in the Uefa ranking. In addition, we have two Champions League qualifiers again, and the cup winner fights for the higher-level Europa League and not for the Conference League.
YB only has the goal of runner-up
YB’s final European qualification is also relevant for the relegation battle. Because now it’s no longer about Europe for the Bernese. Just about becoming runner-up and, above all, wresting second place from FC Basel. With Lucerne and GC, the Bernese meet two of the three teams involved in the brutal Barrage Platz fight!
