Johan Nikles (25, ATP 317) wins the Swiss duel against Leandro Riedi (20, ATP 301) at the Geneva Open and thus wins a game in an ATP tournament for the first time in his career.
The man from Geneva fends off six match points and prevails in an epic fight 5: 7, 7: 6 (7: 3), 7: 5 in just over two and a half hours. In the round of 16, Nikles meets the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 64).
Riedi leaves six match points unused
Nikles had entered the main draw through qualification, the Zurich native who was five years his junior with a wildcard. Both fight for their first win at ATP level. In a balanced game, Riedi has the edge for a long time. He wins the first set thanks to a break to 6:5 and serves in the second at 5:4 to win.
But Nikles fends off no less than six match points and fights for a third set. There he managed the only break to 6:5. In contrast to Riedi, he then uses his first match point.
Medvedev already Out
The top seeded Daniil Medvedev had a very short appearance. The world number 2 from Russia loses after a bye in the 2nd round in just 91 minutes 2: 6, 6: 7 (5: 7) against the French veteran Richard Gasquet (ATP 75). Medvedev has not played since late March after groin surgery. (SDA)
