Jürgen Klopp wanted to visit his childhood idol Boris Becker in prison. But that didn’t work. Now the Liverpool coach reveals the reason.

In an interview, Boris Becker talks about his time in prison.
After his release from prison, Boris Becker (55) spoke in an interview about the time behind bars. In addition to personal experiences, Jürgen Klopp’s (55) name was also mentioned. The Liverpool coach wanted to visit the tennis legend in prison, but nothing came of it. Now Klopp explains to “Bild” why it didn’t come to that.
“We spoke on the phone. It was just particularly important to me to support Boris and to tell him that we won’t let him down. Unfortunately I couldn’t visit him because according to the authorities I would have been a security risk if I visited,” said Klopp. The two have known each other for a number of years.

Klopp invites Becker to Liverpool game
«Boris is the great idol of my childhood and youth. We first met at Wimbledon seven years ago.” Klopp’s wife Ulla organized the meeting at the time. “She knew I really wanted to get to know him. We then spent a sensational evening in Wimbledon – we were on the same wavelength and had a lot of fun.”
He should recover first, says Klopp. “If Boris then wants to see a good football game, he can do it in Liverpool. Although he tends to support other clubs.” Becker is known to be a big Bayern Munich fan.
Ullrich wishes him a lot of strength
In addition to Klopp, former professional cyclist Jan Ullrich (49) also wanted to pay a visit to the six-time Grand Slam winner. “We know each other a little bit. I had asked if I could visit him in prison, but that was not possible because of the few visiting days,” explains the 49-year-old.
The 2000 Olympic champion in road racing sympathizes with Becker. “He’s going through the hardest time of his life right now. But he’s a fighter. I wish him from the bottom of my heart that he can cope with all this and make a good new start.” (mab)
