The German ski star Thomas Dressen rumbles against the future plans of the FIS.
The question of the future of skiing is becoming more and more common in times of climate change. The FIS is considering holding races in gigantic ski halls in places like Dubai.
Thomas Dressen does not believe in this idea. The German speed driver spoke out against the project on Bayerischer Rundfunk in clear terms: “I find it absolute nonsense that there is a discussion about holding a ski race in Dubai.”
Not a world sport
The Kitzbühel winner from 2018 thinks it is important to make sport “more attractive for young people so that they don’t break away”, but you shouldn’t close your eyes to reality.
«Skiing will never become a world sport. We are far too tied to places and seasons for that,” Dressen continues. He doubts that races in Dubai will encourage children to ski in the future. That’s why you should focus on sustainable markets and not on exotic locations, says the German.
His compatriot Felix Neureuther sharply criticized the idea. “Skiing belongs in the mountains,” said the former slalom specialist. (bjl)
