Cruciate ligament tear, season off and accusation by Peter Müller
Kryenbühl is the unlucky man of the season
Former world champion Peter Müller believes Urs Kryenbühl’s recent injury was based on a wrong decision in January 2021.

24 hours after his strong downhill performance in Bormio…

Urs Kryenbühl has been traded as a potential successor to Beat Feuz for a few years. There are actually some parallels between him and the Olympic champion. Like the downhill king from the Emmental, the Schwyzer is 1.72 meters tall. Like Feuz, Kryenbühl was considered a sloppy genius from a very young age. But after he understood the seriousness of racing, the first big successes came quickly. Especially on the technically extremely difficult descent in Bormio (It).
In 2019 he thundered to second place in the classic on the “Pista Stelvio”, in 2020 he finished third. And a few days after team leader Beat Feuz announced his resignation, Kryenbühl indicated again last Wednesday in Bormio that he has what it takes to be the new “Kugelblitz”. Although he had fractured his pelvis eleven months earlier in the Europacup in Saalbach, the 28-year-old stunned with sixth place in the downhill.
But the joy only lasted 24 hours. In the Super-G, his right knee received such a severe blow before the first split that Kryenbühl had to stop the competition with a pained face. In the meantime, the Unteriberger has received the devastating diagnosis in the Zurich Hirslanden Clinic: the x-ray shows a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament. Because the cruciate ligament cannot currently be operated on due to the bleeding caused by the accompanying injuries, the knee will be treated conservatively until the second half of February.
Controversial alternative treatment
Cruciate again! In January 2021, Kryenbühl made a conscious decision not to have an operation on the same knee. After his terrible fall at the finish line of the Hahnenkamm downhill run in Kitzbühel, he was diagnosed with a concussion and a broken collarbone, as well as a torn cruciate ligament and inner ligament. Instead of a conventional doctor, he had these injuries treated by his father-in-law, who works as a naturopath.

Some Swiss ski trainers could hardly believe their eyes when, thanks to this natural therapy, Kryenbühl buckled on their skis almost two months after the Kitzbühel shocker at Hoch Ybrig and conjured up a few sparkling clean turns in the snow. Peter Müller (65) from Zurich, who is the most successful Swiss downhiller in terms of World Cup victories, believes that Kryenbühl has now received the reward for this action. “In my opinion, it was a mistake that Urs didn’t operate on the cruciate ligament at the time. I don’t know of any athlete who, after an injury like this, was able to withstand the enormous strain of this sport for a long time without surgery. But I know many racers who have won races again after cruciate ligament surgery.”
backing from the boss
The downhill world champion of 1987 chalked something else up to Kryenbühl: “Urs made a line mistake in this Super-G in Bormio, he drove too directly into the compression. He should have taken an example from Marco Odermatt, who pulled out nicely at the same point in order to be able to drive through there with a particularly large number of trains.” Head coach Tom Stauffer protects the most unlucky person in his team. “In this situation, I cannot blame Urs in the slightest. In that brief moment, unfortunately, some unfortunate, unpredictable things have chained together.”
Despite the ugly end of the season, Kryenbühl continues to think positively. In a Whatsapp exchange with the Blick reporter, he writes: “I’m fine so far, I’m no longer in severe pain. The rest will be fine too. And until then I have enough time to play Jass …»
