Mauro Schmid can dream of winning the day for a long time in Naples. The man from Zurich came sixth in the 8th stage of the Giro d’Italia.

On the hilly course in and around Naples, Schmid reached the finish line after 153 km, just 15 seconds behind winner Thomas De Gendt. The 35-year-old Belgian clinched his second Giro day victory after the one in 2012 on the Stelvio Pass in a sprint against his two breakaway colleagues Davide Gabburo and Jorge Arcas. Last year, the then 21-year-old neo-professional Schmid surprised at his Grand Tour premiere by triumphing in the 11th Giro stage.
