Memory training: How to remember cards while playing Jass

Counting trumps and knowing which cards are bad is a must. A very good Jasser always knows which cards are still in play. There’s no question: brains are required when playing Jass.

Why is it that some people find it easy to memorize cards and others find it very difficult? “People differ in their ability to remember and remember,” says Klaus Oberauer, head of the professorship for cognitive psychology at the University of Zurich. However, those who were not born with this talent do not have to put up with this gap. “There are various memory techniques that can significantly improve this ability.”

The train station and the Schilten Nell

One of them is the route method. “This is a visual learning technique that is based on our brain’s spatial memory,” explains Oberauer. This means that memory is linked to places with specific information. “Let’s say you imagine your way to work and mark various points that you pass.” This can be a train station, the Italian restaurant around the corner or an ATM. «When playing Jass you now attach the cards that have already gone to the places. So you can remember the order by linking the train station with the Schilten Nell, for example.»

Cards are much easier to memorize with crazy and funny stories. “If you have to remember several cards, it helps to put them together in one picture,” explains Oberauer. For example, if roses are played and the ace, king, and pawn are gone, you can make up a bizarre story: the ace proposes to the king, and the pawn gives them roses. “You create a little story or a film in your mind’s eye and make this information unique in your memory,” explains the professor.

Practice creates masters

As with most methods, these also take some time to apply in a way that is helpful. The brain has to warm up first. No athlete manages to achieve top performance from a standing start. Age doesn’t play a big role in this. “The ability to remember does decrease in the over 60-year-olds, but with these techniques you can largely compensate for it,” says Oberauer. Are there differences between men and women? “Not serious, but women have a slightly better memory on average.”

An important prerequisite for remembering something is to be completely attentive. “Jassen is a social activity in which one also talks, orders a drink in the restaurant or is easily distracted by other things,” Oberauer continues. “It’s important not to let yourself be disturbed and, despite everything, to draw attention to the Jass carpet.”
