After the EM 2024 in Germany, there will be quarter-finals with return games in the Nations League for the winners and runners-up of the highest league. So far, the first-placed teams in the four groups have gone directly into the Final Four. There will also be an additional relegation decision. That was decided by the UEFA Executive Committee in Nyon.

According to UEFA, the number of international matches in the international calendar will not increase. In the future, there will be twelve groups of five and four teams for qualifying for World and European Championships instead of the current ten groups of six and five teams. The twelve group winners will qualify directly for the tournaments, the runners-up are either there too or have to go to Barragen.

For the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada, which has been expanded to a total of 48 teams, there are 16 places for European teams. The winners of the twelve qualifying groups make the jump to the finals, the other modalities still have to be determined with FIFA, according to UEFA. (SDA)
