She keeps raising the bar for her opponents: Mikaela Shiffrin.

Child prodigy, superstar, best of all time. Mikaela Shiffrin (27) has dominated the Ski World Cup for a decade. Not consistently, of course not. But overall in a way you wouldn’t have thought possible. “I’ve had a lot of ups and downs. The last three years in particular have been really difficult,” she says. Shiffrin speaks less about the Olympic disaster in Beijing 2022 when she remained without a medal in five races. No, it was the loss of her grandmother Pauline (1921-2019) and especially her father Jeff (1955-2020) that bothered her.
But now Shiffrin is back. She is almost unbeatable on the slopes – most recently she won four times in a row in three different disciplines (Super-G, giant slalom, slalom). And even without skis on her feet, she seems to be enjoying life. At Semmering (Austria) she seemed tidy and yet relaxed, calm and yet euphoric – she was almost happier about the second place in the slalom of her compatriot Paula Moltzan (28) than about her 80th World Cup victory.
«Mikaela’s life during the winter is full of stress. It is all the more important to find satisfaction in this environment, »says Eileen Shiffrin (63) to Blick. It seems that her daughter has rediscovered exactly this satisfaction – thanks to her boyfriend, the Norwegian speed ace Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (30). “He’s very grounded, his support helps Mikaela a lot, he keeps her calm,” says Eileen. Ultimately, it is very simple: “Aleks and Mikaela make each other happy.”

80 wins – Stenmark within reach
Shiffrin is well on his way to breaking the all-time World Cup win record. She currently has 80 successes in the palmarèrs and is getting closer and closer to both Lindsey Vonn (82 wins) and Ingemar Stenmark (86 wins). There is a lot to suggest that she will have overtaken Vonn in a week, as there are three slaloms (two in Zagreb, one in Flachau) and two giant slaloms (Kranjska Gora) on the program. Shiffrin wastes no thought on such records. “I don’t think about that, to be honest. I’ve already achieved a lot more than I ever dreamed of at the beginning of my career,” she says.
The beginning of their career is a good cue. At the age of 16, Shiffrin entered the World Cup and scored points for the first time in the fourth race. After that, she filled her trophy cabinet as fast as she drove between the gates. Shiffrin won eight discipline balls, won the overall World Cup four times, was Olympic champion twice and world champion six times. For many, Shiffrin is already the greatest ski racer of all time.
The immense pressure she puts on herself with these successes leaves Shiffrin quite cold. She seems to enjoy life more than when she started her career. “Probably yes,” confirms Eileen. “And I also give Aleks credit for that. It’s important to find happiness in things you haven’t seen before – he’s very good at it.” Her daughter has a different perspective on this part of her career, enjoying the races, the environment and the people. “She is aware of what an incredible office she works in.”
“She changed her mentality”
Nevertheless, not everything is going smoothly with Shiffrin either. After starting the current season with two wins (Levi), six races followed without a win – she stayed below expectations, especially at home in Killington (13th in giant slalom and 5th in slalom).
“She changed her mentality over the winter,” says Eileen. And explains what she means. In one of the giant slaloms, she suffered a severe blow to her hand when she got stuck on a gate. Shiffrin continued and won anyway. “Mikaela went through a phase where she tended to drop out or give up at such an event – at least in training.”
That is no longer the case. Shiffrin wins and wins – just like before, but also different.
