With starting number 1, Renée Colliard won gold in the Olympic slalom in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The first Swiss Olympic champion in slalom is dead. Renée Colliard from Geneva died in December a few days before her 89th birthday.
Renée Colliard won gold at the 1956 games in Cortina d’Ampezzo and was the predecessor of Vreni Schneider. The native of Glarus became Olympic champion in slalom in 1988 in Calgary and in 1994 in Lillehammer.
“The number one was my advantage”
It was a very cold day, January 30, 1956. “The thermometer showed minus 28 degrees,” Renée Colliard later said. «The track was icy. I started with number one, which was an advantage in these conditions.” The 23-year-old Romande also felt in her element in the second run, set the best time again and made the surprise perfect with a lead of more than three seconds.
Renée Colliard completed a pharmacy degree while she was still a ski racer. At the beginning of the 1960s she moved to Crans-Montana as Renée Feraud and opened a pharmacy there. (SDA)
