Bo Henriksen started working at FCZ on October 10th.
Christian Finkbeinerfootball boss
Blick: Bo Henriksen, how did you spend the holidays?
Henriksen: There was plenty to do, as did my wife and two younger sons (6 and 14 years old, ed.) moved to Switzerland. The eldest stayed in Odense and will finish school there in the summer. We have moved into a nice apartment in the agglomeration of Zurich, but a move like this means a lot to do: health insurance, insurance companies, etc.
In that case, have you planned to stay longer in Zurich?
My plan is to win. If you win as a coach you stay, if you lose you have to go. Football is that simple.
What was the condition of the team when you started work in October?
I felt that the energy was sometimes lacking due to the English weeks. Only before the last game against Servette (4:1 – ed.) we had a normal training week, which had a positive effect. When you’re champion and then suddenly last, it’s not easy. But it’s fun to be here. Because the team has a lot of quality, energy and power.
Would you have preferred to come during the winter break?
No, I’m glad I’ve already been there for three months. Now I know the league, I know how the club, its employees, fans and sponsors work. And with eight points from the last six league games, things ended up going a little better than before.
FCZ won two of the last three championship games before the World Cup break. Did the interruption come at the wrong time?
No, the break was good for the players. It was a crazy year in many ways: winning the championship, falling to the bottom of the table, twelve weeks in England because of the European Cup – a lot came together. Being a footballer is a privilege, but it’s also hard work when you have to prepare for a game every three days, especially mentally. Because the pressure is great.
Bo Henriksen
Bo Henriksen was born on February 7th, 1975 in Roskilde. The Dane is married and has three sons (18, 14 and 6 years old). As a player, Henriksen won the Danish championship title in 2000, later the striker also played in England, Iceland and the Maldives. Henriksen worked exclusively as a coach in Denmark, most recently for a season at Midtjylland before he was introduced to FCZ on October 10, 2022.

The FCZ is still bottom of the table…
It will be a challenging second half of the season because we have a mountain to climb. Many were already there for the championship title. They didn’t get it because they had more possession than their opponents or were much better individually, but because they all worked hard for each other. We have to revive this culture game by game. But we also want to have fun. Because football is fun.
FCZ have signed two players in Simic and Afriyie. Most notably, your request for a striker was granted by the President.
No Dane had to come to see that… (laughs). We’re happy about the signings, but we need to improve as a team and have more presence in the penalty area because that’s where 90 percent of the goals come from. The defense worked better, but we still have to improve there.
You also have a new assistant in Murat Ural.
genius (Colatrella – ed.) did a great job but he’s going back to youth which makes sense because that’s where – and a lot of clubs get it wrong – we need the best people. Murat is exactly the candidate I was looking for. He was a striker and knows the offensive part of the game. And he knows the league. I’ve had many applications from Denmark, but Murat is the right choice for the club’s future. He’s fantastic because he’s smart, has energy and knows what he wants. And if the players only hear me giving instructions on the pitch every day, they eventually get tired…
The FCZ is in the training camp in Turkey. What are the goals?
When you’re together for a week, you build relationships. That’s the most important. We can also go into more tactical details, because in the second half of the season we want to be a team that attacks, creates chances and plays good football.
Is there a reorientation of the game system?
No, we’re sticking to the tried-and-tested system, but we’ll play more offensively in midfield.
How did you follow the World Cup?
I saw almost every game, which is normal as a coach. There were fewer goals from set pieces than usual. With the exception of the last game, Switzerland was strong – and significantly better than Denmark. (laughs)
Did something surprise you?
The only really big surprise was the extra stoppage time.
Would it be desirable if there were longer replays in the leagues?
That would be okay with me because the longer you play, the greater the chance that the better team will win. The same guidelines must simply apply to all games.
What do you wish for the new year?
My only wish is to win. Because that’s what I’m here for.
Who will be Swiss champion?
Things are looking good for YB, but anything can happen in football.
The FCZ but probably not …
For us, it’s primarily about leaving the bottom of the table as quickly as possible.
