The San Antonio Spurs set a record attendance in the NBA.
68,323 basketball fans attended the NBA match between the San Antonio Spurs and champion Golden State Warriors, a record attendance. Never before has so many visitors attended a regular-season game in the North American professional league, the previous record being 62,046. The number dates from March 27, 1998, when the Atlanta Hawks received Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in the Georgia Dome.
Spurs returned to their old homestead for the club’s 50th anniversary encounter, the Texans’ home from 1993-2002 at the Alamodome. The impressive crowd didn’t help though, San Antonio went down 113-144. Jordan Poole (25 points) was the guests’ top scorer.
“The presentation of the game alone was spectacular,” said Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who played for Spurs for four years in his playing career and won two titles with the franchise. “When you’re cheered on by 68,000 fans, you get goosebumps.” The evening showed “how special the Spurs and San Antonio are”.
Kerr also attended the previous record-breaking game in Atlanta in 1998. At that time, the now 57-year-old played for the Bulls. Hall-of-Famer and Spurs legend David Robinson announced the official number of viewers on Friday (local time). (AFP/mbi)
