Victor Mete’s grandfather (right) was shot dead in a Toronto suburb.
A tragedy struck Sunday in Vaughan, a Toronto (Ka) suburb: a 73-year-old shot dead five people in a condominium complex. As the police announced on Tuesday, one of the dead is Vittorio Panza, the grandfather of ice hockey professional Victor Mete.
The 24-year-old Canadian has been playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL since this season (one-year contract). On Tuesday, his teammates were informed of the death of his grandfather, who immigrated from Italy and whose partner was also shot. A minute’s silence was held before the home game against Tampa Bay Lightning (4-1).
Sadness among coaches and teammates
“Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and the Vaughan community at this difficult time,” the franchise said. “The Toronto Maple Leafs are shocked and saddened by the tragic shooting.” Coach Sheldon Keefe commented on the tragedy after the game: “I haven’t seen him yet, I found out in the afternoon. It’s incredibly tragic.”
Mete’s teammate Auston Matthews (25) is also deeply saddened by the loss of his teammate. “Our condolences go to Victor and to all those affected. It’s really sad, »says the Toronto captain and former ZSC Lions star.
So far, Mete has two assists in eleven games. The defender has not been on the ice since December 6. He suffered a lower body injury in the game against the Dallas Stars. Prior to Toronto, he played for the Ottawa Senators for two years and before that for the Montreal Canadiens for four years. (che)
