NHL pro’s grandfather dies in shooting

Victor Mete’s grandfather (right) was shot dead in a Toronto suburb.

A tragedy struck Sunday in Vaughan, a Toronto (Ka) suburb: a 73-year-old shot dead five people in a condominium complex. As the police announced on Tuesday, one of the dead is Vittorio Panza, the grandfather of ice hockey professional Victor Mete.

The 24-year-old Canadian has been playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL since this season (one-year contract). On Tuesday, his teammates were informed of the death of his grandfather, who immigrated from Italy and whose partner was also shot. A minute’s silence was held before the home game against Tampa Bay Lightning (4-1).
