NHL star refuses to wear LGBTQ jersey
The Philadelphia Flyers took a stand against discrimination with rainbow-colored warm-up jerseys. But defender Ivan Provorov refuses to wear the shirt.

Before the game against the Anaheim Ducks, the Philadelphia Flyers players warmed up in rainbow-colored jerseys.
For the NHL game against the Anaheim Ducks, the Philadelphia Flyers players wore special warm-up jerseys. Player numbers come in rainbow colors and sticks are wrapped in colored tape. As part of the “Pride Night” you want to set a sign of support for the LGBTQ + community. However, one player refused to participate in this promotion.
We are talking about Ivan Provorov (26). The Russian didn’t take part in the warm-up. After the game he explained his absence: «I have decided that I want to remain true to my religion. i respect everyone I respect everyone’s decisions,” explains the 26-year-old. The defender belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church.
Money for auctioned jerseys will be donated
Flyers coach John Tortorella supports his player in this decision. “It has to do with his faith and his religion. That’s the thing I respect about him: he always stays true to himself.” Despite his absence during the warm-up, Tortorella did not drop his defender from the squad.
In the end, the Flyers won the game 5-2. The worn shirts and bats with the Pride motif will be auctioned off by various charities of the club. The money raised will ultimately go to sports clubs that promote diversity. (mab)
