Johan Nikles (ATP 204) makes it into the main draw of an ATP tournament on his own for the first time. In 2016 he entered the tournament in Geneva as a “lucky loser” (loser in the last qualifying round) and last year in Gstaad with a wildcard. Both times he then clearly lost in the 1st round.
On Sunday, Nikles defeated the former top 30 player Lukas Rosol (ATP 249) 6: 4, 6: 4 in the second and last qualifying round. The other three Swiss in qualifying had already failed on Saturday, including number 2 seeded Henri Laaksonen (ATP 97).
After the cancellation of Stan Wawrinka (ATP 361) with Leandro Riedi (ATP 229) there is only one other Swiss in the main field thanks to a wildcard. (SDA)
