Successful – and still down to earth. So is Adelboden winner Marco Odermatt.
Marcel W. Perrenski reporter
Imagine the following scenario: Lionel Messi takes his fan club bus to the team hotel after triumphing in the World Cup final. That is completely unthinkable. The alpine answer to football god Messi has now done just that.
But one after anonther. In order to be able to recharge his batteries as much as possible after his huge victory in Adelboden with a view to the Lauberhorn races, Marco Odermatt wanted to travel to his sweet home in the canton of Nidwalden on Saturday evening. The problem: Because the six-time winner of the season traveled by plane from Salzburg to the Bernese Oberland with his teammates on Thursday after training on the Austrian Reiteralm, his own car was not in Adelboden, but at home in the garage. The association’s main sponsor therefore wanted to provide Odermatt with a classy Audi GS for the journey home. But the Olympic champion declined with thanks.
There was a toast in the bar
Because there was still a seat in one of his fan club’s cars, Odermatt drove back to central Switzerland with his supporters. A stopover was made in Lucerne just before the Nidwalden canton border. There, the overall World Cup winner toasted the recent major success with his fans and friends in a bar.
The fact that the currently most successful ski racer maintains a special closeness to his fans was already evident at the Chuenisbärgli giant slalom 2020. Because Odermatt was unable to start at the time due to a meniscus operation, he followed the race in the middle of his fan club from the grandstand.
Also because of this pronounced approachability of the superstar, his godfather and fan club president receives many e-mails every day from people who would like to become a member of the “Odi Fan Club”. “We now have 2,200 members, including fans from Brazil, Uruguay and Dubai. And about ten of our fan club members come from Austria,” reveals “Götti Paul”. And that’s proof that even our great rivals worship our ski savior.
