The big poker around Yann Sommer.
Andreas BoniDeputy Editor-in-Chief Blick Sport
It’s poker time. Gladbach sports director Roland Virkus says in the “Rheinische Post”: “We will not give up Yann Sommer. We told Bayern that too.” Is that a final rejection of Bayern or part of poker?
Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann, who is now in Qatar with his team, believes in the latter. He says: “I didn’t read the headlines and I fainted. I think it’s part of the job that you put on a poker face in this area.”
Blick expert Markus Babbel also says: “At the moment I’m assuming that it’s a poker situation. That Gladbach is trying to get the maximum transfer fee.”
The big question is: How many millions will Gladbach weaken? The BILD newspaper writes that Bayern are offering around four million euros – a hefty sum considering that Sommer’s (34) contract expires in the summer and he would then be available for free. It is conceivable that an agreement could be reached somewhere around five or six million – with a success clause, so that the sum could rise to seven or eight million. In the end, it’s also about everyone saving face.
Invest everything in Omlin right away?
Babbel says: “The question is whether Bayern want to spend so much money on a 34-year-old whose contract is expiring. Or do you still have a plan B? But of course they have to do something. With Sven Ulreich you have someone who is a very good replacement – but if something happens to him, it is too big a risk with your goals. »
It is also clear: If Gladbach has a replacement for Sommer, the chances of his Bayern transfer increase. Will it be Jonas Omlin (28)? Babbel believes in his ex-player, who played under him at FC Luzern: “I can imagine that Gladbach would invest the money 1:1 in Jonas Omlin. I am absolutely convinced that he would be the perfect successor to Yann Sommer.”
But Omlin (28) has the same problem as Sommer: his club won’t release him. Montpellier is in a relegation battle and has therefore imposed a sales ban on him. But even there there could be a pain threshold, one speaks of seven to ten million euros.
Babbel says: “It’s an honor for Jonas that Montpellier doesn’t want to let him go. It shows how valuable he has become. But we’ll soon see whether the last word has been spoken.”
«Good experiences with Swiss»
Another option as a summer successor should be Philipp Köhn (24), the Swiss goalkeeper in the service of Red Bull Salzburg. “Whether it’s Sommer, Nico Elvedi, Denis Zakaria or Breel Embolo – Gladbach has always had good experiences with the Swiss,” says Babbel.
So does it still work with summer and Bavaria? The next few days will tell, the transfer window closes on January 31st.
