Christian Hirschbühl will not be contesting any races this season.
Setback for the Austrian ski men. Christian Hirschbühl (32) has to postpone his comeback and undergo another operation. The slalom specialist falls out of the entire season. The reason? Persistent ankle pain.
These are consequences of his serious injury, which he suffered a year ago in the slalom in Wengen. At that time he lost both skis in a spectacular fall and suffered a complicated ankle fracture and a broken tibia in the ski boot.
Back on the snow in October
A total of three operations were necessary. Six months ago, Hirschbühl was still optimistic. «3. OP on my ankle/shin was hopefully the last for a while,” he wrote alongside a photo showing him using crutches.
In October he returned to the snow. However, even then it was not painless. Competitive skiing was out of the question. That’s why he hasn’t made his comeback yet.
“Knew it would be difficult”
And now comes the next setback. After the Olympics last year, he will also miss the World Championships. “I knew it would be difficult, but it’s sobering now,” Hirschbühl is quoted as saying in the ÖSV announcement. “At the same time, I’m also glad that the surgery is a way to get away from the pain.”
Hirschbühl, who celebrated his only World Cup victory so far in 2021 in the parallel race in Lech/Zürs (Austria), does not think about giving up. “The way back will be a hard one, but I’m confident that I’ll be able to ski again next season.” (bir)
