In the interview with Austrian TV, Shiffrin’s statement is not correctly translated.
On Wednesday, Mikaela Shiffrin on Kronplatz (It) made headlines with her 84th World Cup victory with a TV interview on ORF. She was “at an unfavorable time in the monthly cycle”, which is why she was more tired than usual.
The Austrian TV presenter Peter Brunner mistranslated the word “cycle” from the English interview. Brunner speaks of cycling and a monthly bike trip, for which Shiffrin would now lack the energy.
After Shiffrin, Brunner also smiles about it
After the American commented on Instagram about the breakdown a day later while pedaling on a bike (“just so it’s clear, I was talking about my period”), the Austrian sports presenter Peter Brunner also laughs about the scene.

Compared to “Today”, the sports moderator admits that he misheard: “The simultaneous translations at ski races are always a tightrope walk because the interviewees are often difficult to hear. In this specific case, I understood the word ‘cycling’, which subsequently led to the translation mentioned.”
Brunner accepts the faux pas with a smile, after all, mistakes happen. And he sees the positive in that. Namely the fact that in the future, a topic that is also very important in top-class sport may receive more attention. The moderator is certainly not completely wrong with this statement.
