Matthias Mayer says goodbye.
Bang in the Austrian ski team!
Speed specialist Matthias Mayer surprisingly announced his immediate retirement on Thursday in Bormio. The 32-year-old announced his farewell shortly after the Super-G track inspection (11.30 a.m.).
“I’ve been thinking for the last few days and I have to say it’s time for me to retire from the Alpine World Cup,” Mayer explains to ORF. “I’ve completed my last inspection, that’s enough for me.”
The sudden departure of the Austrian also has something to do with Beat Feuz: “After Beat’s resignation, I thought maybe the time had come for me,” said Mayer. He just wanted a little rest now.
With Mayer goes a three-time Olympic champion
On Wednesday he missed the downhill because of a gastrointestinal illness. “It was a tremendous season last year with the third gold medal and I started well this year and I’m happy. But it’s enough. I would like to say a big thank you to my sponsors and the ÖSV, everyone did a great job, I’m excited to see how things will continue,” said the Carinthian.
Mayer won Olympic gold three times in his career. 2014 in Downhill and 2018 and 2022 in Super-G. In addition, there is a bronze medal in the downhill in 2022. In the World Cup, he finished on the podium 45 times and won ten races. (mab)
