Playoffs and Masters Final? Have courage!

Anyone who thinks of Swiss football officials immediately thinks of the 2004 European Championship. Back then, in the middle of the spitting scandal involving national star Alex Frei, the bosses of the time managed to play a Jass at the pool in Portugal in all serenity, in shorts and topless. And at the same time inciting Frei to tell the untruth.

That’s what voting is about

Today, Super and Challenge League clubs are voting on various mode changes. The Super League will now include twelve teams from the 2023/24 season. The Swiss Football League (SFL) proposes a championship divided into three phases. In the first (qualifying round) there are 22 match days on which each team plays a home and away game against the other eleven teams. Then comes phase two – the final round: Here the top six from the first phase play in the champions group – and the clubs in seventh to twelfth place in the relegation group. Again, it’s all against all. With respective home and away games, which brings together ten more rounds each.

And then it’s all about the sausage! In the third phase (playoffs), the first and second in the champions group play for the championship title. In the proposal of the SFL in the “Best of 3” system. The ranks three to ten play with return match analogous to the Champions League for the European Cup places. The barrage remains for the second from last in the relegation group against the second from the Challenge League. The last one descends directly.

Only a majority is required for mode changes in the Super League, i.e. 11 out of 20 votes.

Officials, they are a symbol of inertia for years. But now dynamic doers are at work around the league. CEO Claudius Schäfer, Basel boss David Degen or St. Gallen President Matthias Hüppi are people who, in addition to sporting competition, also care a lot about entertainment. Which one can certainly trust a good sense of proportion between sporting relevance and entertainment.
