Co-host pulls out?
Question marks behind the handball championship 2024 in Switzerland
Hungary, together with Switzerland and Austria, will host the 2024 Women’s Handball Championship, wants to reconsider its role as organizer. What this means for Switzerland is still unclear.
The Swiss handball players will enjoy a home European Championship in 2024.
Actually, everything was clear: In 2024, 24 countries will play at the Women’s Handball Championship in Switzerland, Austria and Hungary for the first time. Each of the three hosts is home to two of the six preliminary round groups. In Switzerland, the Basel St. Jakobshalle is planned as the venue.
The main round and final games are increasing in Hungary. But now Hungary of all people wants to play a smaller role. The reason for this is the rising costs as a result of the energy crisis.
The consequences for Switzerland are still unclear. “It remains our primary goal to play the games of the Women’s EHF EURO 2024 in Switzerland,” said Swiss association boss Pascal Jenny in a statement. Jenny continues: “We were informed about the uncertainties on the Hungarian side and are now in contact with our co-hosts Hungary, Austria and the EHF regarding the next steps.” (cmu)
