“snow4free” initiative
Russi shows Zurich city children the stem turn
The campaign came about 18 years ago from an idea by Bernhard Russi. The ski legend still accompanies “snow4free” personally on the slopes when children from the lowlands are allowed to go into the snow for free.

Bernhard Russi shows it: The ski legend is this week with children from the “snow4free” initiative in the Sattel-Hochstuckli ski area.
On school-free Wednesday afternoons in the summer, the children go outside to play football or something else. But what about in winter? It’s not possible to get to the ski slope quickly. That’s why ski legend Bernhard Russi (74) started the “snow4free” initiative back in 2005. In plain English: Free in the snow.
“This initiative is very important to me,” says Russi, “it’s not about finding new talent for ski racing. It’s simply about health, that the children can also do sports in winter.”
The offer for the Unterland children is free of charge
Every winter, around 2,500 children from the lowlands between the ages of 9 and 13 come to action on the ski slopes on a Wednesday afternoon thanks to «snow4free». Because ski resorts, bus companies and sponsors support Russi’s campaign, transport, equipment, the ski pass, ski and snowboard lessons and meals are all free.
This Wednesday, Russi will be there in person when around 100 children from the city of Zurich practice the stem turn in the Sattel-Hochstuckli ski area. “One third was on skis for the very first time. The eagerness to learn is amazing, after an hour many can already drive down a hill, says Russi.
The Olympic champion is amazed that many kids still know him as a skiing celebrity, despite the difference in generations. The consequence? Russi writes autographs on children’s helmets in the evenings. “But it’s not about me,” says the man from Uri, “it’s about having fun and being active in the fresh air for the children.” (md)
