Jannik Sinner fights back impressively after being 2-0 down in sets and advances to the round of 16.
Jannik Sinner and Marton Fucsovics (30) have twice dueled at Grand Slam tournaments, both times the latter triumphed. This year it also looks like the Hungarian will prevail – but then the Italian starts to catch up madly.
The first two sets go 6: 4 to Sinner, in the following three rounds the world number 16 leaves the “Hungarian Hulk”, as he is sometimes called because of his incredible physique, only three games. In the fourth set he is still 0:2 behind with a break, but then wins twelve (!) games in a row. Final score: 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. The 21-year-old has never been able to turn a 0:2 set deficit before.
A heavy chunk is now waiting in the round of 16. Stefanos Tsitsipas (24) previously dispatched the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (26, ATP 63) 6: 2, 7: 6, 6: 3. The Greek, who entered the tournament Down Under as number three and is now the best-seeded player after Nadal and Ruud were eliminated, has not yet lost a single set.
Murray rages after epic match
At 4:06 a.m. local time, Andy Murray uses his match point, the epic battle against Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (26, ATP 159) is over after 5:45 hours. The Scot wins 0: 2 sets behind 4: 6, 6: 7, 7: 6, 6: 3, 7: 5. Of course, the three-time Grand Slam champion is happy about moving into the third round, but the 35-year-old is outraged at the press conference that the game lasted until the early hours of the morning.
“I don’t know who’s supposed to get what. After the game we come here and have to talk about it and not about the ‘epic Murray Kokkinakis game’,” complains the world number 66. after the longest game of his career. “If my kid, ball boy or girl was at a tournament and didn’t get home until 5 a.m., I would be upset as a parent. It’s not good for her.”
Nevertheless, he wants to thank the fans at Margaret Court Arena: “Amazingly, the spectators stayed until the end and I really appreciate that they do that and create such an atmosphere. Especially because some have to work the next day.”

Swiatek flawless
The women’s tournament favorites are in impressive form. World number 1 Iga Swiatek sweeps qualifier Cristina Bucsa (25) out of Margaret Court Arena 6-0 and 6-1. The Spaniard can just about avert the maximum penalty of a so-called “glasses”, i.e. a 6: 0, 6: 0. In the twelfth game brings the world number 100. through their serve.
In the round of 16 Swiatek now meets the Kazakh Elena Rybakina. The world number 25 fought her way through the American Danielle Collins (29, WTA 11) in three sets after just over two hours. Collins’ compatriot Jessica Pegula had an easy day. World number 3 wins 6-0, 6-2 against 20-year-old Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (WTA 60). (che)
