Mario Balotelli faces the media for the first time since arriving in Valais.
FC Sion is currently in the training camp in Estepona, a seaside resort in southern Spain. It’s a special preparation for Mario Balotelli. The Italian is currently still struggling with muscular problems in the thigh. In an interview with the “Nouvelliste”, the 32-year-old is confident: “My goal is to be fit again for the derby against Servette.” This will take place on January 29th.
As a reminder, «Super Mario» is suspended for the first game after the winter break against Lugano after giving the Basel fans the finger.
In the interview, the striker talks about his start to the season, which “went pretty well in a league that takes a certain amount of time to get used to”. Overall, he has been on the field in nine games so far, made 545 minutes and scored five goals.
He also gets along well with his new teammates. The Italian is certain: “Sion can be the best team. If you look at the players, I haven’t seen many teams that are superior to us.” Nevertheless, in his opinion, FC Sion is still a bit too “tense and blocked during the games.”
Tramezzani’s dismissal came as a surprise
Will this change with the arrival of Fabio Celestini? The Vaud coach replaced Paolo Tramezzani at the end of November. This change came as a surprise to Balotelli. “Paolo’s departure was disappointing because I value him both as a person and as a coach.” Nevertheless, the Italian is happy about the cooperation with Celestini. “I’ve only had good things to say about him since he arrived.”
Balotelli still has a lot planned before the end of the season. The Italian wants to win the Swiss Cup with FC Sion. The next hurdle for the Valais is the quarterfinals on March 1st against Lugano. The striker also hopes that his club will “secure a place in the European Cup via the championship”.
Sion is currently in 8th place in the Super League – three points behind fourth place.
