Ziegler’s return to Valais
“Sion is the club of my heart”
FC Sion flies to the training camp in Marbella on Thursday. Newcomer Reto Ziegler, who played for the Valais from 2015 to 2017, is also there.

“I feel at home in Sion.” Reto Ziegler (36), whose wife is from Valais, is looking forward to his second engagement at FC Sion. “I want it to be the last club of my career. But that doesn’t mean I’m here on vacation. I want to achieve success, to prove once again that I’m one of the best in my position in Switzerland.”
Ziegler still has a score to settle
Sion will start the second half of the season on January 22 against Ziegler’s former employer Lugano of all places. The Romand left Ticino during the winter break after a scandal – he was temporarily suspended during the preliminary round. “I gave the club a lot and we parted ways on good terms,” Ziegler says, but he doesn’t want to give any details about what happened. Lugano didn’t put any obstacles in his way when he changed, and he was grateful to the club for that.
Ziegler won the cup with the Ticino last spring thanks to the final victory against St. Gallen. The trophy, which is so coveted in Valais, is also one of the main goals of the season in Valais. Ziegler already has a past in this competition in the Sitten jersey. The native of Geneva was involved in both winning the 13th star in 2015 and losing the final in 2017 (lost 3-0 to Basel). Even as captain in the only final defeat of the Valais so far. “It still hurts today,” says Ziegler. He hopes he can return the favour. In the quarter-finals on March 1st, Sion and Ziegler meet … Lugano.
Also under discussion at Lausanne
Between 2015 and 2017, Ziegler played almost a hundred games for Sion. The defender, who won 35 caps for the national team between 2005 and 2014, was in contact with several clubs and almost signed for Lausanne-Sport before finally signing for Valais. “When FC Sion wanted me, it was my first choice because it’s the club in my heart.”
