Austria’s ski emperor bows to Marco Odermatt
“Some of the best I’ve ever seen!”
After the giant demonstration in Adelboden, hymns of praise were even raised for Marco Odermatt in the zone hostile to Swiss Ski.

With his giant gala in Adelboden, Marco Odermatt also won some hearts in Austria.

For some Austrians, it is the maximum penalty if a Swiss wins a series of ski races. But Marco Odermatt has a few supporters even in the country of our arch-rival. To date, there are ten Austrians who pay the membership fee in the official Odi fan club.
And with Franz Klammer (69), even Austria’s downhill emperor, who holds the World Cup record in the supreme discipline with 25 victories, bows to the Nidwaldner. “What Odermatt showed in the second run of the giant slalom in Adelboden on Saturday is one of the best I’ve ever seen,” enthuses the 1976 Olympic champion and adds: “Kristoffersen has already presented an extremely strong run. But then Marco countered with a real hussar ride, in which he came very close to falling three times. But with his outstanding class he mastered these delicate moments. And it won’t be long before this brilliant guy wins a World Cup downhill run for the first time.”
“He has the cheek of Hermann Maier”
Maybe on Saturday at the Lauberhorn descent in Wengen? ORF expert Hans Knauss (51) burned his mouth properly last winter with his forecast regarding Odermatt’s appearance. “At the time, I was sure that Marco didn’t have the routine for this very special descent, so I didn’t believe that he would end up in the top ten on this slope. But then, after winning the Super-G and second in the shortened downhill, he finished fourth in the original downhill. And that’s why I believe he’s absolutely capable of winning the longest downhill run in the world this year.”
The Kitzbühel winner of 1999 admires something else about Odermatt in addition to the delicate technique, the outstanding instinct and the mental strength: “Like Hermann Maier in my time, he has the cheek to dare almost impossible things again and again. And thanks to his great form, everything is really working out for him at the moment. »
“That’s the greatest thing of all!”
Fritz Strobl (50) was also an exceptional ski racer. The downhill Olympic champion from 2002 still holds the course record on the “Streif” in Kitzbühel (1.51.58). And he is also one of the Austrians who publicly express their sympathy for the 25-year-old Swiss athlete of the year. «It is a feast for the eyes to watch Marco skiing. His movements are harmonious from head to toe.»
After Odermatt’s victory in Adelboden, Strobl was impressed in a different way: “I think it’s the greatest thing that Marco sat down on his fan club’s bus to go home after this historic success. This action proves that he is a particularly down-to-earth and likeable person. »
