Claudio Cadonau is a phenomenon.
Marcel AllemanReporter ice hockey
Langnau defender Claudio Cadonau has done something unique. He has already been sent into the shower three times this season with a remaining exclusion. And three remaining lockdowns (5 plus 20 minutes) – that’s a villain total of 75 minutes. It is all the more astonishing that the warhorse otherwise behaves as pious as a lamb on the ice. Cadonau has not yet received a single two-minute penalty!
“I’ve never experienced that before and I wouldn’t have thought it possible,” says the veteran. He has no real explanation for this phenomenon, but thinks that his exclusions should be viewed in a differentiated manner. “During the length of the game against Bern, it was a bit of a swing with Thierry Bader, but nothing bad. We were both amazed that we had to take a shower.”
It suits the messed up season
Before Christmas in the game against Servette, Cadonau not only received a remaining suspension after a gang shove against Deniss Smirnovs, but also a steep four game suspensions on top of that. Which raises the suspicion that he has gradually ended up on the list of repeat offenders in the league judiciary. He himself says: “There were some unfortunate actions. But they are on my account now, which is my bad luck.”
However, the 34-year-old defender also thinks that his disastrous record of remaining exclusions and suspensions matches his personally messed-up season so far. He was brought to the Emmental from Zug in the summer as a top performer. But the Zurich player was not able to live up to this claim with his performances, in some cases he was even redundant. “I have different expectations of myself,” explains Cadonau. “It’s up to me to get better every day and to show the coach that he can’t get around me anymore.”
“New Year New luck”
His ban expires at the weekend, but the defender can be used again from Saturday against Kloten. And so he says to himself: “New year, new happiness.” Cadonau wants to rise to the challenge, because challenges have shaped his entire career so far: “As a junior, I was never the great talent that jumped from one national team to the next. I rarely received anything as a gift, I always had to work hard for it.”
