Stan Wawrinka wants to play Davis Cup again.
When asked by Keystone-SDA in Melbourne whether Stan Wawrinka would definitely not be part of the Davis Cup in Germany, Stan Wawrinka replied: “No, that’s not at all certain. I already said in autumn that I would like to play Davis Cup again before the end of my career. I was told: It will be decided after the Australian Open.”
But Wawrinka also says that he only wants to return to the team if the boys (Marc-Andrea Hüsler, Dominic Stricker, Leandro Riedi, Alexander Ritschard), who made the return to the best nations with Henri Laaksonen last year, also have him there want to have and also think that he can help the team.
The experience at the United Cup, when he formed a team with Hüsler and Stricker and the women as a Swiss captain at the beginning of January, was described by “Stan the Man” as “great”.
Switzerland plays on 3./4. February in Trier for the first entry into the top 16 teams under the new Davis Cup format. Captain Severin Lüthi nominated a five-man team without Stan Wawrinka on January 6; however, this list is only provisional. In the world group it is mandatory to name the players one month before a game. According to the regulations, a maximum of three players can be substituted up to one hour before the draw on February 2nd. (SDA)
