Formula E in Mexico City
Strong start to the season – Buemi best Swiss
The ninth Formula E season got off to a promising start for Sébastien Buemi: the man from Vaud is very close to the podium in Mexico City, but ultimately has to settle for 6th place.
1/5
A successful start to the season: Sébastien Buemi finished sixth in Mexico City.
Buemi, who is new to England-based team Envision Racing, only won more than eight championship points in one race twice last year. This year it’s already in the first race. For a long time he can even count on third place – shortly before the end he is passed on to sixth place after a small mistake.
In contrast to the former champion (2016) and record race winner, the other two Swiss involved in the electric racing series, Nico Müller and Edoardo Mortara, did not see anything countable in the first race.
Nico Müller is fourteenth on his return to Formula E, Edoardo Mortara does not even see the checkered flag two days after his 36th birthday: Last year’s third in the world championship ended up in the tire wall halfway through the race after a spin with his Maserati.
Jake Dennis wins at the start
Briton Jake Dennis from the American team Andretti, which may soon also be present in Formula 1, can be celebrated as the first winner of the season in the high altitude of Mexico City at 2240 meters above sea level. The podium is completed by German Pascal Wehrlein and Brazilian Lucas Di Grassi, who started from pole position. Defending champion Stoffel Vandoorne is only tenth.
Formula E continues in two weeks with a double race in Diriyah in Saudi Arabia. The last two of a total of 16 races of the season will be held in London on the last weekend in July. (SDA)
