Successful start! Corinne Suter gets three podium places in the first three races of the season.
When Corinne Suter landed at Zurich Airport at 3:49 p.m. yesterday, Monday, she not only had three glass trophies and a cowboy hat in her luggage, but also memories for life. “To win what might be the last race in Lake Louise is unbelievable. I like this place so much and I always wanted that, »she says happily.
On the twelve-hour journey from Calgary (Ka) via Frankfurt (De) to Kloten, Suter found peace to let the experience sink in. She thought back to the first descent, where she narrowly missed victory at minus 20 degrees – she was four hundredths short. She remembered the second descent where she finished third. Above all, however, the images of her fifth World Cup victory, the second in the Super-G, went through her head: “I downloaded the race and watched it on the tablet. However, at some point I fell asleep, the long time including the training camp in Copper Mountain was exhausting. »
Nevertheless, Suter still sees her victory ride. And also those of their biggest competitors. «When Cornelia Hütter was out and about, my heart dropped. She was incredibly fast. The fact that she was ultimately two hundredths slower is bitter for her. Nevertheless, she congratulated me – I think that’s very nice. We athletes know that sometimes you have hundredths on your side and sometimes you don’t.”
Uncertainty is gone
The start of the season was more than just a success for Suter. She scored 240 out of a possible 300 points. This puts her in third place together with Wendy Holdener (29) in the overall World Cup. US star Mikaela Shiffrin (27) is the first to have only 25 points more. Does Suter look a little at the big crystal ball? “No. My focus is clearly on the speed disciplines,” she says. That’s exactly why she skips the giant slalom in Sestriere next Saturday. She will recharge her batteries at home in Flüelen UR and travel to St. Moritz GR on Sunday to prepare perfectly for the Speed Triplet (two downhills, one Super-G) from December 16th to 18th.
One thing is certain: Suter will travel to the Engadine with the certainty that he is in great shape. “Last summer was the hardest of my career. I had a lot of appointments after winning the Olympics. That was nice, but also exhausting. That’s why I wasn’t sure how good I was. That’s why I’m not only feeling joy at the moment, but also relief.”
“take it easy”
This looseness is also evident in the conversation. Despite the hardships, the Schwyzerin is relaxed. It is precisely this feeling that she wants to take with her in the months and years to come. “Sure, every race starts from scratch. When I’m standing in the starting house, I always feel a tension. But I’m more relaxed about everything that’s going on now than I used to be.”
The main reason for this: Suter has won everything there is to win for a speed specialist with two small crystal balls (downhill and super-G), as well as world championship gold and Olympic gold in downhill. “And now I’ve also won in Lake Louise. That was important to me because I really like the place and maybe we’ll never go there again,” she says.
