Andrei Rublev delivers a war of words with the chair umpire.
Andrei Rublev is in the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. In the game against the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori he (almost) didn’t show any weaknesses and won 6:2, 6:4, 6:7 and 6:3.
Only in the third sentence does the Russian briefly lose his composure. At the score of 2: 3, 30:30 a backhand lands in the net, Rublev screams through the stadium in Russian. The chair umpire Simon Canavan apparently heard a bad word and warned the 25-year-old with “audible obscenity”. Rublev no longer understands the world and heads for the referee.

“You have to take that back,” Rublev demands. «Are you from Russia, do you speak Russian? There are so many similar words.” Canavan stands by his decision, saying he took Rublev’s screams as a curse.

Then the twelve-time ATP tournament winner makes a somewhat bizarre comparison. “You’re talking to me now and I understand ‘F*** you’. Why don’t you give yourself a warning too? Because that’s what I understand.” The referee ignores the statements and asks the world No. 6 to continue playing.
Rublev also loses the next point, trailing 2-4. Although he saves himself in the tie-break, he loses it and with it the set. In the end, it was enough to get into the third round, where he met Brit Dan Evans (32, ATP 30). (che)
