YB sports director From mountains to brutal competition
“The boys have to be able to deal with that”
Ahead of the competition in the table, calm next to the square: At YB everything seems to be in minne. The only source of danger is competition.

YB sports director Steve von Bergen takes a close look at how the players behave in the brutally strong squad.
Three gardeners lovingly take care of the perfectly level lawn this morning before the YB stars enter the field for another unit in the training camp in Marbella. Warming up for the next championship party in Bern after a year’s break? Sports director Steve von Bergen does not want to know anything about it, despite a ten-point lead over “follower” Servette: “There are such statements from the outside. We see it very differently and will certainly not accept any congratulations. The 20 remaining games is a long way. Every opponent will definitely want to beat us, we have to be prepared for that.”
The former Nati defender has been in the role he took over from Christoph Spycher for six months. While “Wuschu” has risen to the YB board of directors and supervises the sports area from there, Von Bergen has taken over his everyday tasks. The current transfer period is the first for which he is officially responsible as head of sport. It looks like a quiet baptism of fire, which the 39-year-old also assumes: “The desire is to play the second half of the season with the current squad.”
That could change if a mega offer for shooting star Fabian Rieder arrives by the end of January. Or Christian Fassnacht, who should deposit his change request again in the summer. But, according to Von Bergen: “In both cases, nothing concrete is currently going on.”
YB and the luxury problem
In terms of sport, YB has been doing well since the setback in the European Cup qualifiers (out against Anderlecht), and the Bernese don’t offer a target off the pitch either. In addition, Spycher as a teacher, alongside the concentrated football competence with chief scout Stéphane Chapuisat and training director Gerard Castella. An ideal environment for Von Bergen to grow into his position in peace – right?
Well: there is a risk of conflict in the competitive struggle. YB is the only Super League club that can field two teams of equal strength. A luxury problem. From Bergen, who is the first point of contact for the players on the carpet floor, will be required to keep the peace in what is perhaps the best YB squad of all time. The head of sport: “We value a great deal of competition. High quality in training is important for the development of the players. The boys have to be able to handle that. Even in the top leagues that our young players are aiming for, nothing is given to you.”
