It is written on the faces of the players, the sports director and the coach of YB – the great joy that the Super League starts again at the weekend. «After almost six weeks of preparation, it’s finally starting again. Players, coaches and staff need the competition, that’s why we do the job,” emphasizes coach Raphael Wicky during a media event in Wankdorf.
The Young Boys meet GC on Saturday (8.30 p.m.). In Zurich’s Letzigrund they want to pick up where they left off at the beginning of November before the World Cup. The Bernese dominated the first half of the season. The big lead over second-placed Servette is ten points.

Winning the title is the clear goal
“It gives us a certain security, but we must not fall into lethargy and slack off. Staying at the top is more difficult than getting there,” warns Christian Fassnacht. The striker thinks of the past season, “when we played well, but didn’t make any profit from it”. Something like that shouldn’t happen this time.
Despite a dose of caution, YB is going into the second half of the season with a lot of confidence. The goal of the championship title, which was declared in the summer, has been incorporated into the players, coaches and sports director. “We also want to be on top at the end of the season. The championship trophy has to go back to Berne,” affirmed defender Cédric Zesiger. “It’s clear we want to be champions,” emphasizes Captain Fabian Lustenberger.
Coach Wicky is more sober: «The objective has not changed. We want the title. But nothing has been achieved yet. We got a good starting position, but we’re not even halfway through the season.”
No transfers planned
YB tackles the mission of regaining the title with the same squad as at the start of the season. Accordingly, shooting star Fabian Rieder should remain in Bern. “We assume that he will stay with us at least until the summer. That’s our wish too,” reveals sports director Steve von Bergen.
YB is also not active on the transfer market because of Ali Camara’s serious injury. “We have a large squad with a lot of quality. Especially in the central defender position. That’s why we won’t sign any new players,” concluded von Bergen.
