Yann Sommer plays for Bayern for the first time on Friday evening.
Andreas BoniDeputy Editor-in-Chief Blick Sport
Cleats clatter on the ground, players high-five, sweat mixes with the air in the belly of the Leipzig stadium. Yann Sommer is still wearing his jersey with the FC Bayern Munich emblem and has put on a training jacket.
It’s the end of a completely crazy week. First, poker between Gladbach and Bavaria lasts for what feels like an eternity. Then on Monday it looks like the deal will fail. On Wednesday, the clubs then agree on a transfer fee of eight million francs, which can be supplemented by another 1.5 million in bonuses. A handsome sum for a 34-year-old whose contract would have expired in the summer.
Wednesdayaend flies in summer from Düsseldorf to Munich. On Thursday to Leipzig. On Friday he is in Bayern’s 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig. After his debut for Bayern, the national goalie takes the time for the Blick interview.
Yann Sommer, how did you personally experience these crazy days?
Yann Sommer: It’s been wild the last few weeks. But that’s the football business.
On Monday it was said at times that the deal had failed. Did you get nervous?
We had very open talks with Gladbach, which I really appreciated. After eight and a half years, that’s important. At some point I withdrew from the whole thing. It was a lot, a lot was written. Then I stayed calm and watched it with my family.
“It was a cold start with Bayern”Yann Sommer on the game against Leipzig
When did you first come into contact with Bayern?
I can’t even say exactly anymore. It’s been a few weeks.
How did you feel about the game?
It was a very intense game. You could feel that both teams hadn’t had a game for two months, it took a while to get in. And the team doesn’t know me that well yet, I don’t yet know the team optimally in terms of play structure. You noticed that on certain routes. But that’s completely normal, we’ll work that out in the next few days.
Were you more nervous than usual?
I was very excited. I haven’t had much time to think…
Yann Sommer’s debut after the game is also an issue for his teammates. Thomas Müller says: “He didn’t have much to do. Once or twice on the ball you noticed that it was his first game for Bayern. But that’s also legitimate, he’ll grow into it well.” The reception was “short and sweet”, “but he is also a well-known face in the league. Accordingly, we know him personally from playing against each other. We have often been allowed to make acquaintance with him in an unpleasant way…»
For the medical check: Yann Sommer has arrived in Munich(00:41)
Were you relieved when it was finally over?
I was just happy. It all happened very quickly on Wednesday, my wife flew to Munich with me, we left our children with their parents-in-law. After that I had long medical tests, completed a short final training session, signed the contract and played in Leipzig. A cold start.
Did the family say from the start: Munich is good, can we do that?
I am lucky to have a wife who is very open to new things. But of course, we were already thinking. I had a great situation in Gladbach. But moving to Bayern is now a new challenge in my career, a new challenge. I am glad that I can accept this challenge.
Do your girls get it yet? The little one at one and a half not yet, the big one at three, right?
I think even the big ones don’t really realize it yet. But they will notice when they have a new home. We’re going to look for something nice now.
“I had a virus and lost weight because of it”Yann Sommer on the past World Cup
You can feel it in Leipzig: This topic with Manuel Neuer (36), who could now be requested by our national goalie from the summer, is electrifying the German journalists. Especially because Sommer signed until 2025, while Neuer’s contract only runs until 2024.
Bayern strive to downplay the issue by empowering the German world champion. The bosses around Julian Nagelsmann and Hasan Salihamidzic emphasize that Manuel Neuer is the captain, number 1. But you have to give him time to recover from the injury. Everything else will be seen in the summer and then managed, says Salihamidzic.
But precisely: Nobody can say today when and how Neuer will return after breaking his tibia and fibula. Salihamidzic (“We’re glad he’s here. He’s a really good guy.”) and Nagelsmann (“Yann played a very good game. I’m very, very happy.”) also praise their new goalkeeper.
Yann Sommer, how long did you think about the situation with Manuel Neuer? Could you then be number 2 from the summer?
At the moment I’m not thinking about what could happen in summer. I’m really looking forward to the next tasks. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the team properly over the next few days. step-by-step
Sommer has a not entirely unproblematic World Cup in Qatar behind him. He injured his foot a few weeks earlier and only comes back for the tournament. And you can’t quite shake the impression that he wasn’t one hundred percent fit. Especially since he didn’t have his best day in the round of 16 with a 6-1 loss to Portugal.
How long did it take you to digest the World Cup?
A few days of course. I quickly went away with my family to Dubai. So not far from Qatar. To switch off. The four of us really enjoyed it with our two girls.
How fit were you really at the World Cup? How much has your foot disabled you?
Not the foot at all. What set me back was the flu, which also made me miss the third game against Serbia. It came at a strange and difficult time. That brought me down a lot.
Was it because of the air conditioners or a virus?
I think a virus.
But not Corona?
no But I also lost weight because of it. Then, on the day of the game against Portugal, I felt good again. That’s why I played, otherwise I wouldn’t have done it. But of course it wasn’t ideal.
The 6-1 loss to Portugal was a shame because it sticks in people’s minds.
Naturally. But we all know, you and I: If we want to beat Portugal, we need an absolutely top day. We didn’t have that. We had some sick players in the days before.
There were conflicting statements as to whether or not you discussed the line-up with the back three in the team council. How was it?
I can’t even tell you exactly how it went in detail. Usually, when it comes to the system, I don’t have much to do with it. I’m more into goalie stories.
Yann Sommer personally
Yann Sommer was born on December 17, 1988 in Morges VD on Lake Geneva. When he was two and a half years old, his family moved to the canton of Zurich, first living in Feldmeilen and then in Küsnacht. As a junior, he plays for FC Herrliberg – because Mama Monika is close enough to drive him to training. When the family moves to Basel, he moves first to Concordia Basel and then to FCB. As a professional, he plays for Vaduz, GC and Basel, where he won the championship four times in a row from 2011 to 2014. He then moves to Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he will play until winter 2023 before FC Bayern Munich sign him. He has been in the national team since 2012 and became a regular goalie after Diego Benaglio retired after the 2014 World Cup. Sommer was Swiss Footballer of the Year in 2016, 2018 and 2021. He has been in a relationship with the Cologne lawyer Alina since 2017, the couple married in 2019 and have two daughters together.

The World Cup is in the past, Bayern is the future. Summer runs into an old friend. It is Max Eberl who brought him to Gladbach in 2014 and is now the strong man at RB Leipzig. The two hug each other before Sommer disappears towards the cabin. He concludes: “I’m already glad that Saturday after the game will be a quiet day…”
His Bayern madness continues on Tuesday with his first home game: Cologne comes to the Allianz Arena.
