Turbulent days for Yann Sommer! In his open talks with Borussia Mönchengladbach, the 34-year-old Nati goalie expressed that he would like to move to Bayern Munich – provided the clubs agree. Sommer would definitely respect Gladbach’s decision as he has deep ties to the club and the region. But since Bayern are apparently willing to pay five million euros for a contract term of six months, the transfer seems very realistic.
Because according to Blick information, Bayern really want summer and have committed to it. He’s the ideal solution because his goalkeeping matches Bayern’s style of play perfectly.
Long contract in Munich
It is also a fact that if Sommer moves to Bayern, he will sign at least until 2025. Because this corresponds to his status on the market: At Gladbach he has had an offer for an extension until 2026 for a long time. Rumors that Manchester United will get serious (again) in the summer persist.
But now everything comes down to Bayern – and it should happen as quickly as possible. The record champion flies to the training camp in Qatar this Friday. Sommer is said to be on board to meet his teammates.
So far they only knew him as an opponent when he drove them to despair: for example at Gladbach’s 2-0 in July 2021 in Munich. When Gladbach was 5-0 in the cup in October 2021. And especially when it was 1-1 in August 2022, when Sommer made 19 saves in the Allianz Arena and set a new Bundesliga record.
The plan before the World Cup
For industry experts, it has long been clear that Yann Sommer will not prematurely extend his contract with Gladbach, which expires in 2023. The hope was always there that he would play a strong World Cup in Qatar and then switch to a big club.
It was also clear in the summer that top clubs were looking at him: Manchester United wanted to sign him. But Sommer decided against the transfer. Before the World Cup, it seemed too risky to be number 2 in a fight for the regular place with David De Gea (at the club since 2011). Clubs like Nice with Lucien Favre or Leicester didn’t stand a chance.
Manchester United’s interest could reignite in the summer, De Gea’s whereabouts are up in the air and the No2 has just turned his back on the club in Martin Dubravka. But priority now has a move to Bayern, where he should be in goal from the start of the second half of the season at RB Leipzig on January 20th.
Kahn’s advance laurels
Bayern boss Oliver Kahn, himself a three-time world goalkeeper of the year, already ennobled Sommer in a documentary on the pay-TV broadcaster “Sky”. There he analyzed scenes from Sommer and was amazed by his speed on his feet. Sommer is “incredibly quick. He continues the tradition of very, very good Swiss goalkeepers.”
And continues: “There is always a discussion about how big a goalkeeper has to be. Does every goalkeeper have to be 1.90 meters tall? At 1.83, Yann Sommer is not the tallest. And you can compensate for that as a goalkeeper with excellent jumping ability.”
“Sky” expert Lothar Matthäus also considers a change from summer to be “most sensible”. He explains: “Bayern have a class keeper who also doesn’t make a fuss in the summer when Neuer returns. That seems to me to be a very good transfer for all parties.”
Three titles possible in half a year
It is still difficult to predict how quickly Manuel Neuer will return to goal after breaking his leg. Neuer, who will then be 37, definitely wants to contest the season before the 2024 home European Championship. But it is also obvious that Yann Sommer does not shy away from competition.
But first the era would begin with him as Bayern’s first-choice goalkeeper: Yann Sommer could now play for the German Championship, the DFB Cup and the Champions League in the first half of the year. The first hurdle in the premier class will be a treat: Paris SG are waiting in the round of 16 with Messi, Neymar and Mbappé.
