Markus Kuster wants to get started at Winterthur.
Nati squad, bankruptcy, moving abroad, substitute bench, unemployment and now the new start with the Super League promoted: the new Winterthur goalie Markus Kuster spent the past few years on the roller coaster, sporty and emotional. “I’ve learned not to plan too far ahead. It usually turns out differently than you think anyway, »says the 28-year-old during a Blick visit to the Winterthur training camp in Marbella.
For six years, from 2014 to 2020, there is no getting past the 1.94 meter giant at the traditional Austrian club Mattersburg. The first reward: several squads for the national team, trained by Marcel Koller at the time. The second: When “his” FC Mattersburg slides towards bankruptcy, Kuster, unlike many teammates, makes the jump. In the Bundesliga, which he has been following since childhood. Although only in the second to Karlsruher SC, the dream of moving to football-mad Germany still comes true. The disillusionment follows: Because he is ailing in the preparation, his competitor Marius Gersbeck plays. And so well that Kuster stuck on the bench for two years.
“Setbacks were brutal”
Nevertheless, he looks back positively on the time in Karlsruhe. “Because I felt very comfortable in the team and as a person there.” It only gets really tough afterwards: When the contract is not extended in the summer of 2022, negative thoughts take over in Kuster’s head. What if there are no more suitable offers and your professional career is suddenly over at the age of 28? “There have been a few inquiries. I didn’t want much of it. And the clubs that would have tempted me then decided against me. These setbacks were brutal, and each time the doubts increased. At the same time, I had to continue training seriously in order to be able to get on with the right call immediately.”
Patience brings roses. In mid-December, FC Winterthur contacted Kuster looking for a replacement for the injured Timothy Fayulu and gave him a contract until the end of the season. The roller coaster is heading back up. In order to be able to play again, he has to fight his way past Jozef Pukaj before the start of the second half of the season. Despite shaky performances at the beginning of the season, according to coach Bruno Berner, he is “a toe-length ahead”. No matter how happy Kuster is, he accepts the task because: “I finally have perspectives again. After what my new teammates told me, I’m really excited about the atmosphere in the Schützenwiese stadium.”
