Bernese in free fall
The SCB has already messed up 36 points after tours
Four bankruptcies in a row – plus various playful leads in games: SC Bern remains inconsistent. Now the Bernese threaten to lose touch with the top group.

When SCB threw Johan Lundskog out on November 5, the Bernese were sixth in a playoff position. “We absolutely have to improve if we want to be in the fight for the direct playoff places in spring,” said CEO Raeto Raffainer at the time.

The sentence is still relevant more than two months later under the new coach Toni Söderholm. After four bankruptcies in a row with 23 goals conceded, the SCB is in free fall, falling after the 2: 4 against Davos behind promoted Kloten in 8th place. And the train is approaching from behind. Not only SCB sports director Andrew Ebbett has been expecting for weeks that the champions, who are still two points behind the Bernese, but also have three games less on their account, will pick up speed and move up into the top 6.
“Lost the thread”
It’s not all bad. But SCB rarely if ever manages to play at a good level for more than 60 minutes. In the first of the two “mini-playoff” games against Davos on Friday, SCB got off to an excellent start, played elatedly and led 2-0 rather too narrowly. Then followed a horror third for Bern, in which HCD dominated (23:1 shots on target!) and turned the tide.
“As so often, we lost the thread,” said Nati defender Ramon Untersander afterwards in a MySports interview, a little at a loss. Also recently against the bottom of the table Ajoie (3:6) a fateful middle section (0:4) broke the neck of the Söderholm team.
3 games against direct competitors in a row
In general, the Bernese, who now also have Captain Simon Moser out with an ankle injury until mid-February, often have trouble dealing with a lead. SCB has already lost 36 points in games where it was ahead.

If SCB doesn’t want to lose touch with the top 6, they have to find the right balance quickly. Because now there are three more games against direct competitors. On Sunday in Davos, on Friday in Zug and next Saturday against Fribourg. As Raffainer said in November? “We absolutely have to improve if we want to be in the fight for the direct playoff places in spring.”
