How does Lara Gut-Behami get off the starting blocks? Your winter should have started long ago.

Lara Gut-Behrami (31) does not know that. She has been completing the full World Cup program for 14 years, but she has never started a winter so late. Solden? Has been cancelled. The Matterhorn descents? Likewise. Lech Zürs? Also there, no race. And because Gut-Behrami doesn’t do slaloms, the Levi weekend also passed her. There is a risk that she will be rusty before her season opener, the giant slalom in Killington (USA). «The situation is unfavourable. It wasn’t easy for Lara to keep up the tension,” says women’s head coach Beat Tschuor.
Sure, Gut-Behrami benefits from her experience. Nevertheless, the disadvantages compared to a driver like Mikaela Shiffrin (27), who has already won two races, are obvious. Especially since the 76-time World Cup winner is enjoying a real home game in the state of Vermont – 40,000 spectators are expected in the village of 1,407. “But Lara makes a very good impression here in training. She can deal with the situation, »says Tschuor.
Gut-Behrami decided against speed camp
In contrast to the speed team around Corinne Suter (27), Gut-Behrami recently did without the training camp in Copper Mountain (USA). She trained in giant slalom on the Diavolezza GR, put in a Kondi block and traveled straight to Killington.
The Ticino doesn’t have good memories of the slope. Her record from four races: one retirement, one 23rd and two 19th places. However, all riders last made it to the finish line in 2019 – Gut-Behrami was still looking for her giant form. Last winter the race was stopped after nine riders – too much wind. Gut-Behrami was third at this point. “It’s looking good this time, we have dry artificial snow and a good base,” says Tschuor.
