European Championship Qualification, Women’s World Cup, U21 European Championship
These highlights await in the football year 2023
Five reasons why the football year 2023 will also be spectacular.

The Nati with Ricardo Rodriguez starts on March 25th in the European Championship qualification.
Qualification for EM 2024
After the World Cup is before the European Championship. However, there are some question marks before the start on March 25th in the qualification for the EM 2024 in Germany. What is the analysis of national coach Murat Yakin after the crashing elimination in the World Cup round of 16 against Portugal? And what changes are there in the team? The politically tense situation in the Balkans and the war in Ukraine are also creating uncertainty. As of now, Switzerland is starting the campaign against Belarus in the Serbian city of Novi Sad behind closed doors. The Nati have two more explosive duels against Kosovo later in the year. The other opponents are Israel, Romania and Andorra. Anything other than direct qualification for the European Championship as first or second in the group would be a major disappointment.
Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand
After the Winter World Cup in Qatar, the women will also hold their Winter World Cup – albeit in the European summer. The Women’s World Cup begins Down Under on July 20, with Switzerland taking up residence on New Zealand’s South Island in Dunedin, the coldest venue of the tournament. The new strong women in the association are the SFV director Marion Daube and national team coach Inka Grings. Maybe the women can do what the men haven’t been able to do since 1954: make it into a World Cup quarter-final. The group with hosts New Zealand, Norway and the Philippines gives hope for a coup.
New mode in Super League
It’s the last half of the ten-league season, and the revolution will follow in the summer. Better: The little revolution! Instead of the playoffs that were decided and then buried again before the introduction, the Super League will wear the kilt in the future. With two teams more than before. Will it actually be more exciting at the top of the table than it was last? doubts are warranted. Ah, by the way: Last champion of the ten league is 99 percent YB. Maybe with a new record advantage, the previous one is 31 points.
This is how Scots mode works
In a first phase, three rounds of eleven games per club will be played. After completing this phase, the 12 teams are divided into a so-called Championship Group (places 1-6) and a Relegation Group (places 7-12).
All teams take the points from the first 33 games.
In the second phase, one round of five games per club will be played in each of the two groups. The clubs in the Championship Group play for the championship title and for the European Cup places. Clubs in the Relegation Group play against relegation, with the bottom placed relegated directly and the second bottom playing a barrage (two games) against the Challenge League runners-up. A total of 38 rounds would be played.

Promotion battle in the Challenge League
Alfred Hitchcock couldn’t have done it any better: after weeks of neck-and-neck races with Aarau and Schaffhausen, FC Winterthur secured promotion last spring. Until the final minute of the last match day, the outcome of the three-way battle was still completely open! It’s quite possible that the Challenge League will go one better this season in terms of excitement: Wil and Stade Lausanne-Ouchy are currently two outsiders occupying the two places for direct promotion, with the favorites Lausanne-Sport and Aarau lurking behind. Exit? Completely open. Tension? Guaranteed!
U21 European Championship in Romania and Georgia
Football fans will also get their money’s worth during the Super League summer break: from June 21 to July 8, the U21 European Championship will take place in Romania and Georgia. Also present: Switzerland with the new coach Patrick Framework. With Italy, France and Norway, the “small Nati” caught a hammer group, moving into the knockout round would be a small sensation. In addition to the title, three starting places for the 2024 Olympic football tournament in Paris will also be awarded.
