Remo Meyer has been controversial as head of sport since taking office.

Remo Meyer’s work at FCL as head of sport is controversial. While the board of directors is behind him, majority shareholder Bernhard Alpstaeg wants him gone, although he now has a better picture of him. Blick makes the check: What does Meyer’s balance sheet look like after more than five years in Lucerne?
When Meyer started his work in the summer of 2017, the club strategy said: “We want to win trophies”. He did that with the cup victory in 2021. Otherwise his record is poor: steady midfield in the Super League, never in a group phase internationally and last season after the worst preliminary round in club history only narrowly escaped relegation.

Seven coaches have tried under Meyer. René Weiler was the biggest coup and the biggest disappointment at the same time. After six months it was already over – despite a three-year contract. Things didn’t go well for long with his friend Thomas Häberli, whom he publicly denounced out of nowhere. Other misunderstandings included Fabio Celestini and Sandro Chieffo. Meyer has hit the bull’s eye twice with Gerardo Seoane and Mario Frick. Nonetheless, that’s not enough. The others were too disappointed for that.
Blick grade: 3.5
A good sports director is expected to dare. Almost all transfers were successful last summer. But anyone who makes more than 50 transfers in five years has made some mistakes. What is striking about Meyer’s commitments: The players who are supposed to become top performers regularly disappoint: Eleke, Margiotta, Ndiaye, Badstuber and this year Ardaiz. But when Meyer brings in footballers who don’t come as stars, then they work. There is also room for improvement when selling. It is only thanks to the homegrown talent that he has had a positive transfer balance over the years.
Blick grade: 3.5
Year after year, he integrates U21 players into the professional team, which he can then sell for millions. Ruben Vargas, Darian Males and Filip Ugrinic have flushed a lot of money into the FCL coffers. Next up is Ardon Jashari. Nevertheless, the question arises: Shouldn’t the FCL rely entirely on this model? There are eleven homegrown players in the current squad. Regular players with sales potential are just two of them. Not enough for the club with the best youth work in Switzerland.
Gaze grade: 5
It is said that the sporting director is the most important person in a football club. Meyer definitely does not appear as such. Communication is clearly his weakest subject. At the beginning of his tenure, he often practiced empty phrases. Added to this was the memorable PK after Markus Babbel’s dismissal, when he read his words from a piece of paper and trembled all over. He has improved since then, but for a 4 he has to come out of himself and not only show his passion for the club internally, but also represent it externally.
Gaze grade: 3
Remo Meyer received an overall grade of 3.8 from Blick. Better than the last look check. But just barely enough.
