Luxury problem for EHC Biel
Three goalies are at least one too many
EHC Biel now has a strong goalie trio. Which is not unproblematic. But it can also be a great advantage in the playoffs.

Harri Säteri is having an outstanding season.

Finnish Olympic champion and world champion Harri Säteri (33), national hopeful Joren van Pottelberghe (25) and veteran Simon Rytz (39). Since van Pottelberghe reported back from his cruciate ligament rupture, EHC Biel has had an illustrious goalie trio. “For me as head of sport, it’s a gift. But I don’t know if it’s the same for the coach,” says Martin Steinegger with a smile.
This luxury could well become a problem. Because three goalies with ambitions are at least one too many. “During a whole season it would be difficult to act in this situation. But for this short period with the last qualifying games and the playoffs, I consider the risk of unrest to be very small,” believes Steinegger.
Borrowing a goalie is not an option for the Biel sports director. He wants to go into the season finale with all three. ‘Imagine I hand one in and something happens. Then the people chase me through the city with the pitchfork!” In addition, van Pottelberghe has only just returned from a serious injury: “He’s not at 100 percent yet. The goal is to get him to that level by the playoffs.”

The current table second is definitely prepared in the most important position for the most important phase of the season. But what about next season? Has Säteri, who is having a great season, done his duty? The Finn has only signed for one year.
“We don’t rule out that he will stay,” says Steinegger, “because Harri not only convinced us as a goalkeeper, but also as a person. You don’t want to just let someone like that go.” Säteri, for his part, also expressed an interest in staying. But is it financially feasible to start next season with Säteri and van Pottelberghe?
