Katharina Liensberger no longer has a coach.
Livio Magoni (59) is retiring with immediate effect as the coach of the Austrian technology specialist Katharina Liensberger (25). The Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) announced this on Monday.
The reigning slalom world champion and the Italian coach only teamed up last April. Even when he was committed, many wondered whether this constellation could bear fruit. Above all, it was doubted whether the different characters of the two fit together.
Difficult communication
Now it’s clear: It didn’t fit between the two. Liensberger couldn’t cope with the rough working methods of Petra Vlhova’s (27, Slk) former grinder. This was not only shown by the lack of results. Although she finished in the top 10 twice in a slalom, she is still waiting for a podium finish in her flagship discipline after seven races this season.
Before Christmas, Liensberger admitted that communication was a challenge. The background: Magoni does not speak German and the Austrian does not speak perfect English.
“It was not planned”
What was ultimately decisive for the separation is open. Magoni is quoted as follows in the ÖSV announcement: “It was not planned that our path would end prematurely due to technical, logistical and organizational misunderstandings.” He also regrets that the expectations in the cooperation were not met.
Liensberger, for her part, thanks him for his work. For them it is now in the ÖSV technology team. “I accept the new challenge of changing coaches,” she says optimistically.
Maybe this will give a jolt to the team. Things have not been going well for the Austrian technicians this winter. In six giant slaloms and seven slaloms, they have only achieved one podium place – Katharina Truppe came third in the Killington slalom. (bir)
