What the YB star says about it
Von Ballmoos is the best goalie in the preliminary round
YB dominated the first phase of the Super League season. The Bernese are also at the top when it comes to goalies. David von Ballmoos had more work to do than you might think.

The goalie statistics of the first phase of the season: David von Ballmoos finishes in first place ahead of St. Gallen’s Lawrence Ati Zigi.

Leader YB has conceded the fewest goals in the first Super League stage with only 9. So is goalie David von Ballmoos (27) in the statistics from Blick partner SofaScore simply the best in the preliminary round because he hardly gets balls on the box?
no Statistically, von Ballmoos is not noticeably less busy than his colleagues. For example, like Yanick Brecher from bottom FCZ, he makes 29 saves from shots within the sixteen.
“It’s exciting to see the numbers like this,” says von Ballmoos, when he looks at the table and sees his number of saves, “my impression wasn’t that extreme, I didn’t feel under constant fire.”
From Ballmoos with Bernese understatement
Ballmoos also beat St. Gallen’s celebrated World Cup hero Lawrence Ati Zigi in the goalie ranking. Is the Berner even in the form of his life? “I always try to make progress and remain self-critical,” he says, “consistency is important to me. I think I’ve done that well over the past few years.”
The Emmentaler is not that surprised that YB is not only at the top with top scorer Jean-Pierre Nsame, but also at the back of the goal. Von Ballmoos: “We aim to play at the front. The basis for this is a solid defense. So much the better if you can actually do it. That shows that we’re on the right track.”
This is, of course, gallant Bernese understatement. After the gnarly second half of last season and the missed European Cup qualification, YB is again in a class of its own – the Christmas cushion is a whopping 10 points.
YB veteran with captain’s armband
Von Ballmoos describes that coach Raphael Wicky immediately demanded the focus on the league and the cup after the European setback. But von Ballmoos doesn’t want to hear anything about a championship celebration or even a double party: “There’s enough to celebrate when the time comes.” The fans are hot anyway and are pouring into Wankdorf like never before.
Because Captain Fabian Lustenberger is often not in the starting eleven, Vice-Captain von Ballmoos often wears the armband this season. A real “Berner Giel” leads YB into the yellow and black stadium. A dream? “It’s really great and also motivates me, even if I’m the same guy with or without a pad,” says the keeper. After the resignations and departures of Wölfli, von Bergen and Hoarau, he gradually grew into the role of leader.
Team leader at the regular club, best keeper in the league, with YB on the way to the fifth championship title in six years, the wedding in the summer. Things are going well at von Ballmoos.
