Will former Nati buddies Gavranovic and Steffen soon become teammates at FC Lugano?
Michael WegmanDeputy Head of Football
The question is not if Mario Gavranovic will return to Ticino, but when. The 33-year-old striker’s contract with Kayserispor in Turkey expires in the summer – he would then be free. Or will he even change in January?
Possible. The runner-up in the Super League does not want to make any more transfers. But this can change quickly. Blick learned: If the Slovenian center forward Can Zelar (23), who has been on the radar of various clubs for a long time, leaves the club in the next few days, Gavranovic would be high on FC Lugano’s wish list.
Already in the summer one is said to have dealt with a commitment of the 41-time Nati striker (he announced his resignation shortly before the World Cup), but Gavranovic was still too expensive. This should no longer be the case six months before the end of the contract. In addition, a sale of Zelar would fill the coffers of “Bianco-Neri” quite a bit. A Gavranovic return would be obvious.
“My family and friends are in Lugano”
Because he’s not averse either. His wife Anita already lives in Ticino with their little daughter Leonie. Leonie is going to kindergarten in Lugano in the summer. “I still have a contract with Kayserispor until the summer. Let’s see what the future brings. What is certain is that I want to continue playing, I feel great. It is also certain that my family and many of my friends live in Lugano, »says Gavranovic to Blick.
In the meantime, he could have imagined living in Zurich or Zagreb, but it is now clear that the Gavranovics will focus on Lugano in the future. He and Anita built a house just a few minutes away from his parents’ house.

Gavranovic was in Lugano for ten days
The Swiss-Croatian was born and raised in Lugano. He learned to play football with the FC Lugano youth team. After one season in the Challenge League, he left at the age of 18 to conquer the football world. He scored regularly, whether in FCZ, Schalke, Rijeka, Zagreb, Kayserispor or Nati dress. “Now I’ve been away from home for almost 15 years, that’s a long time,” he says.
For now, though, he’s looking forward to getting back on the pitch. He missed the last few games because of a torn muscle fiber. Gavranovic believes he can get back into team training next week. That’s why he’s just been in therapy for ten days. In Lugano. Where else?
